Android Apps Crash Globally Due to Faulty System WebView Update

A widespread issue on March 23, 2021, caused popular Android applications like Gmail and banking apps to crash instantly upon launch.

On March 23, 2021, millions of Android users worldwide began experiencing sudden, repeated crashes across a wide range of mobile applications. Popular services including Gmail, Facebook, Amazon, and various banking apps would fail to open or close immediately after being launched. The issue was not isolated to a specific smartphone brand, affecting devices from Samsung, Google, and other major manufacturers.

Google confirmed that the instability was caused by a faulty update to the Android System WebView. This system component is a critical piece of the Android ecosystem that allows developers to display web content directly inside their applications. Because so many apps rely on this shared component for core functionality, the bug triggered a massive ripple effect across the entire OS.

To resolve the crashing, users were initially advised to manually uninstall the latest updates for Android System WebView through the Google Play Store or their device settings. This action reverted the component to a stable factory version, immediately restoring app functionality for most affected users. Some users also found success by updating the Google Chrome browser alongside the WebView component.

Google quickly acknowledged the disruption and worked on a permanent server-side and client-side fix. Within several hours, the company released official updates for both Android System WebView (version 89.0.4389.105) and Google Chrome. Users were urged to visit the Play Store and install these specific versions to ensure their devices remained secure and functional.

The incident highlighted the fragility of mobile operating systems when a single core component experiences a failure. By the following day, the majority of reports had subsided as the patch rolled out globally. For users who still face issues, Google recommends ensuring all system apps are fully updated to their latest versions.
