Avast Antivirus Mistakenly Blocks French Government Website Caf.fr

Users of the Avast antivirus software have reported being unable to access the French Caf.fr portal due to an erroneous security warning.

Users of Avast antivirus software recently encountered an unexpected barrier when trying to access caf.fr, the official website for the Caisse d'Allocations Familiales in France. The security software flagged the government portal as a dangerous site, preventing users from logging in to manage their social benefits. This issue appears to be a false positive, where legitimate traffic is incorrectly identified as a threat.

False positives in antivirus software often occur during automated updates to virus definition databases. These systems use heuristics and pattern matching to identify malicious code; however, if a website's security certificate, script behavior, or server configuration mimics certain known threats, the software may trigger a block. In this case, the Avast engine mistakenly categorized the French administration site as harboring malware or phishing risks.

For users who are certain they are visiting the official government URL, it is possible to bypass this block by adding a manual exception. Within the Avast settings menu, navigate to the 'Exceptions' tab under General settings. By entering the full URL of the website and confirming the addition, the software will stop intercepting the connection to that specific domain. Users should ensure they are not on a spoofed or cloned site before performing this action.

Avast and the CAF technical teams are typically quick to resolve these categorization errors once they are reported. As the antivirus provider updates its global threat database, the block will be lifted automatically for all users. In the meantime, those affected are advised to keep their software updated to the latest version to receive the fix as soon as it becomes available.
