Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Suffer Global Outage Due to Network Error

A massive six-hour outage took down Meta's entire suite of apps, including Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp, due to a internal routing failure.

On October 4, 2021, billions of users worldwide were unable to access Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. The outage lasted for approximately six hours, effectively silencing Meta’s global communication platforms and impacting businesses, individuals, and organizations that rely on these services for daily operations.

The disruption was caused by a configuration change to the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between Meta's data centers. This change resulted in a withdrawal of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routes, which essentially made the company's servers invisible to the rest of the internet. Because the servers could not be located, the apps and websites became unreachable for the duration of the event.

Inside the company, the situation was complicated by the fact that internal tools were also affected. Reports indicated that employees were unable to access building entrances or internal communication platforms, which delayed the physical and digital troubleshooting required to restart the systems. This created a 'lockout' scenario that extended the time needed for recovery.

Users were advised to wait for official updates through alternative channels like Twitter as engineers worked on-site at data centers to reset the systems manually. There was no evidence that user data was compromised during the downtime, as the issue was strictly related to network connectivity rather than a security breach.

Service was eventually restored late in the afternoon after engineers successfully re-established the network routes. Meta issued a formal apology for the disruption, citing a faulty configuration change as the root cause. All platforms have since returned to normal operation, and the company has implemented new safeguards to prevent similar routing errors in the future.
